August

august-alchemilla-mollisAnother great Month to enjoy your garden, take time out to sit and look at how your garden has grown.

Give you garden a good soaking at least once a week, this includes the lawn, after two very wet Summers the plants will not be used to all this heat.

Trim back lavender bushes after they have just finished flowering to remove the old blooms and shoot tips. This will prevent them from going ‘Leggy’ and giving you a tighter bush. Take care not to cut back too heavily into any old wood, you may not get any re-grow.

Prune wisteria.. It’s the last opportunity for the Summer prune this month, shortening their long wispy sideshoots back to about five or six leaves from the main framework. If the plant's flowering performance was poor last spring, drench the soil with a high-potash fertiliser for an improvement.

Sweet Peas, the more you cut for a vase, the more you get, but you must remember to give them all a good feed or the offerings will be poor.

Remember to continue to tie in those other climbers.

Any Shrubs that have just finished flowering, give them a trim, this will ‘Densify’ the plant, giving you more flowers next year.

Remember to deadhead those perennials, such as Salvia’s, Heleniums and Penstemons. You will get another flush of flowers within weeks. Even better ones if you give them a good feed.

Try to give your Borders, Pots and Hanging baskets a good feed as often as you can. You will really notice the difference if you don’t.

Start to have a look at the bulbs you could be ordering for Autumn Planting, take a look at the Photo’s or think back to the Winter and Spring, where do you need some Colour. A bag of Daffodils or Tulips shouldn’t cost a lot and will certainly cheer you up on a cold spring day. Imagine some pretty little Narcissi showing their heads through a blanket of snow.
