December
December is here and before I go any further I would like to wish all who read my monthly column a very merry Christmas and to have a wonderful new year.
Make sure you continue to remove the leaves from the lawn. Use a leaf cage if you can. Leaf mulch contains different nutrients to general garden compost and can be used around Ferns, Rhododendrons or in you shady areas. You can leave some leaves on the beds and borders, they will rot down gradually over the winter, and the worms will also take them down. You can be turn in when you dig over the borders in the mid winter.
If you haven’t already, order bare-rooted trees, roses and Shrubs, they are cheaper. Soak the roots for about an hour but not any longer as it will start to rot and plant, scatter in some bonemeal to help strengthen the roots. Don’t let them sit around for days they should be planted as soon as you get them.
If your lawn is frozen try not to walk on it, as you will actually break the grass blades, if you need to regularly walk over to the shed consider placing a pathway to it. Give us at Fleurscape a call and we can give you a price.
Make a note of where your lawn is waterlogged and use fork to make approximately 4 inches (Just over 10 cms) depth holes and brush in readymade lawn dressing.
Give your lawnmower a good service ready for next year.
