February

february-hamamelis-x-intermediaIf we are lucky enough and the weather stays fine for a few days to get out in the Garden, there are some jobs you could find to do. The lawns could do with a very high trim.
It’s not about the perfect lawn yet, just reminding the grass that the time is coming for it to grow. Don’t use the mower if it’s got a Roller! If there are worms casts, sweep before you cut.

Borders will give you huge rewards if they have received some well composted manure now if not in the Autumn. Use it as a temporary Mulch and it will help to stop any weeds coming through. This can then be dug in later on in the spring.

Pruning Wisteria.
Now is the best time to see your Wisterias Structure . Along these mains stems will be gatherings of shoots, reduce the length of these by no more than 2 -3 buds and you will be rewarded with lashings of beautiful lilac or white flowers in May – June.  During July any wispy stems should be shortened by two thirds.

If you want a splash of colour now, Go and get a Witch Hazel, these easy to grow Shrub have beautiful Yellow, orange or Burnt Red Flowers, put it at the back of a border and it will give background support to the Summer Flowers.

Have a great time and take a good look at you Garden. What you see now is the Backbone to your Garden, what grows and flowers around this backbone will give you the heart and sole of your outside space.
