July
Lawns:- try and not cut the same way each cut, this is really not good for the grass blades, they will actually grow in the same direction, cutting in all four directions is best, you will have a nice strong upright blade and a much better lawn.
If you have a dry spell and your lawns are quite short when you cut leave the lawnmower cage off, this will give the lawn a bit of a nitrogen feed.
Continue to deadhead your perennials such as Delphiniums and Lupins and you will get more flowers.
Trim your wisteria, reduce the leggy stems to approximately 20 cms; this will allow them to put more energy into growing good flowering buds for the January Prune.
Dead head roses regularly to encourage new blooms.
You can give your Mock Orange (Philadelphus), Deutzia, Weigela or Exchordia a prune after they have finished flowering.
Take seeds of Foxgloves and scatter in an area that’s not going to be disturbed.
Feed Your Tomatoes on a weekly basis and try not to let them go dry otherwise you will get split skins!!
Give your borders a good liquid feed, this is a short term feed and should be done on a regular basis, either weekly or fortnightly, if you haven’t got a lot of time.
Tie in climbers particularly Climbing Roses, they will become too heavy for their stems and will break, so tie them to the nearest stable area.
The more you take the flowers off Sweet Peas the more you will get, bring them into the house and let them fill the rooms with their wonderful scent. This will also increase the flowering season.
Make sure your camellias and Rhododendrons have a good amount of water, this will help make sure you have some beautiful flowers next year. Please try and use either rain water or standing water. These plants hate tap water, so if you haven’t got any rain water fill a couple of buckets with tap water and leave for a couple of days (With a teabag in it is even better – used but not with milk!!)
Give your Hanging Baskets either a granular feed or a liquid feed try tomato feed weekly and they will flourish.
