May

may-peony-oficinalisDaffodils… Some say dead head, some say there is no proof that this works… It’s up to you, if you have just a few, the job can be a joy, if not, don’t break your back, they will still give you that wondrous feeling when Spring returns! Sprinkle some organic fertiliser over the area and wait around 5 weeks before removing all old leaves, let them die down, by doing this all the goodness is going back into the bulbs.

Now’s the time to give your Forsythias (Beautiful Yellow flowered shrubs) a  good prune, now that it’s finished flowering, do it any later and you risk not having any flowers next Spring!

Lawns… If you have quite a weedy established lawn (more than 12 months) give it a lawn feed and weed, this will reduce the amount of broad leaved pests such as Plantain and Dandelions. Some may also get rid of that horrible creeping Clover as well. Check the label. This will at the same time give your lawn extra nitrogen feed. After approximately 2/3 weeks you will see brown dead weeds and moss, give it a light racking every couple of weeks and these will be gone, or if you don’t have the patience, hire a scarifier and remove it all in one go. Then you can throw grass seed over your lawn, this will increase the stock, giving you a more lush lawn.

Give the borders a quick dig over or if this has already been done use a hoe, this will dislodge a weeds and knock back any seeds coming through. This job should be done every week or so, this will keep on top of those pests. Give your spring bulbs a sprinkling of an organic fertiliser such as blood, fish and bone and give a generous amount around your shrubs and perennials.

Take a trip to the garden centre, have a look at their Summer Bulbs, Corms and Tubers, the range is quite large. Begonias, Nectaroscordum or Lilies. These will give you so much joy in the Summer and full of colour. Whilst you are at the garden centre don’t be too tempted to buy any summer bedding plants (They are too tender for outside until the end of May). Unless you have space for them either in the greenhouse or a sunny patch in the house.
