September

september-rudbeckia-goldsturmSeptember can surprise us with a few warm and often hot days which can be interspersed with some rain, The gentler weather usually sees a sudden spurt in growth, especially to lawns, so you could return to the weekly cut.

Take a look at your garden, the Autumn is a good time to improve the garden as a whole, does your fence need replacing? Does your patio need jetwashing? Plan for any jobs to be done. Look at your borders decide which plants could be divided or just moved to a better place. Remember to water well in for a few weeks and to add a good drop of fertiliser to newly planted shrubs and trees to get them off to a good start. But only apply once.

Give your evergreen hedges a final trim, all you need to do is to take the tips back to the actual framework of the hedge.

September is another great month for your garden. There are lots to see, from the delicate movement of ornamental grasses, which are starting to mature into strands of jewels that move in the wind to Echinacea and Heleniums, standing upright, holding large beautiful colourful daisies like flowers.

Now’s the time to gather the seeds echinaceas, cosmos, guillardia, ornamental grasses and sunflowers are to name but a few.  If you have left one or two Foxgloves, collect the seeds but bear in mind that the plant won’t produce flowers next year, only lots of green leaves, but will flower the following.

When the weather cools, it is an ideal opportunity to work on your lawn. Try a good Autumn Feed, this will help reduce the moss and will feed the roots of the grass plants. You could also scarify the lawn, this will help remove some of the moss and cut up creeping lawn weeds. Re- seed to increase the plant stock per square centimetre. This will help choke the weeds out and produce a constantly fresh looking lawn.
